SECRET METHODS MAGICIANS AND OTHERS USE TO DECEIVE THEIR AUDIENCE
Abracadabra! : Secret Methods Magicians and Others Use to Deceive Their Audience by Author: Nathaniel Schiffman (2005, Paperback)
ISBN-10: 1591022487 Published by Prometheus Books Amherst NY
Synopsis Magicians use more than just mirrors, string, and sleight of hand to deceive their audience. Those who are masters at this trade have developed an arsenal of techniques to manipulate people. Every action and utterance on stage and off is precisely planned to achieve a specific effect. Abracadabra! is an insider's look at what goes on at a magic show, behind-the-scenes, and in the mind of the magician. Nathaniel Schiffman explains the principles of deception, how the conjurer uses misdirection of space and time to mislead the audience; how silly and simple optical illusions can fool us, and what to look for during a magic show. Also explored in detail is the world of off-stage magic. Some "magicians" use various techniques in life to deceive and influence you, yet these magicians don't boast of their magic talent, because they are advertisers, politicians, army commanders, spies, con artists, computer programmers, movie directors, faith healers, psychics, and others. This is a layperson's guide to methods used to mislead or fool you. Lighthearted and informal, Abracadabra! will fascinate anyone interested in knowing how one person can control many. Included are hands-on experiments, magic tricks, and reader participation segments. You'll soon see that magicians don't just manipulate playing cards and animals; they manipulate you!
Condition of book: Has been read, thoroughly.
Book may have marks used for notes of parts that I thought were important.
The book HAS no mold or mildew smell what so ever.
I read this book and really learned a lot from it.
How politicians use “magic” to make promises that they know they can not keep but still look voters in the eye and tell them so. Like “No NEW taxes“, or “I did not have sex with that woman!“
One of the magic examples, the disappearing of the statue of Liberty trick was SO brand "X" that it worked!
Author Nathaniel Schiffman calls these tricks, evanishments.
Pages 43 to 44 go into great detail as to the differences in evanishments. Another well pointed out trick is magic shows, especially the evanishment acts. The magicians assistant is their number ONE asset. Because while all eyes are centered on the magician, the assistant is doing something else. The opposite is also true too. That scantly covered “hottie“ is the distraction so the magician can make their move. Sort of like 2 peas in a pod.
But what really was a surprise to me was that Author Nathaniel Schiffman respect for “Cardicians“ as being one of the most skilled of all magicians. Why? Because they do it right in front of your face with NO smoke and mirrors. NO staged areas or props. Just like a magician back on June 29, 1981 in Atlanta GA.
Yet at the same time the author tells us that “cardicians“ make for bad gamblers. Card tricks are “prearranged setups” and “Cards Codes“ are the key to these tricks. Did you know than more books have been written about card tricks than any other form of magic?
On page 192. “The illusion occurs because we made an initial assumption based on a partial proof.“
Like “Billy did it !“
But chapter 15: Misdirection Magic in Everyday Life was the best part of the book for me.
“Magic is: Using trickery and deceit to make the impossible happen.”
